Chapter Eleven

That evening Kyle sat at the bar staring down into his second glass of whiskey. Right after Chuck's announcement, Gloria talked Cindy into giving her a ride to the airport, grabbed her bag out of his car and took off like her tail was on fire. He'd been too shocked to realize much of what was happening until it was too late to stop her headlong dash.

He was married. The last thing he'd ever anticipated had happened, but he wouldn't admit to regretting a minute of it. Even standing before the Elvis impersonator and reciting his vows was more than he'd ever dreamed, because the woman standing beside him was the only woman he could imagine being his wife.

Now she was legally bound to him and had run—putting thousands of miles between them before he'd been able to catch up. He'd tried, racing to the airport, but he'd missed her flight by minutes.

So here he sat, drowning in whiskey and wishes.

He felt more than saw a body slide onto the barstool next to him but he ignored whoever it was, instead raising his glass and gulping down the fiery elixir.

“Why the hell aren't you on a plane chasing after Gloria?”

Chuck. The son of a bitch who'd ruined everything.

“Because I'm pretty sure she's never going to want to see me again after the stunt you pulled.”

Chuck waved at the bartender to refill Kyle's glass and give him the same. He tossed back his whiskey with a wince. “Crap, you're drinking the cheap stuff? Are you trying to rot your stomach?”

“I'm trying to get drunk enough to forget that my best friend betrayed me. So why don't you back the hell off or get out of my face.” Kyle spun the whiskey-filled glass on the bar top, watching the colors of the amber sparkle in the overhead lights.

Chuck sighed. “Kyle, remember who you're talking to. I've watched you practically mourn her ever since we left Miami all those years ago. Don't forget, I was there when you confronted her brother, trying to find her when she disappeared from Miami.”

“What, so you decided I hadn't hurt enough, you'd twist the knife in and finish gutting me?”

“No. I figured I'd give you your best shot at being with her. Damn it, nobody's ever been able to replace her in your heart. Yeah, yeah, I know you screwed your way through groupies and wannabes. Because they were safe, no-strings attached.”

Kyle wanted to tune him out or ignore him, but knew he was right. He had been there since the beginning of his career. Chuck had spotted him at an open audition in Miami Beach two weeks before high school graduation, and immediately signed on to be his manager. Ten years older, he had connections in the music industry Kyle could only dream of, agents and record label producers, and had the juice to make things happen.
